The Last Common Ancestor of Humans and Apes Was Too Smaller Like Gibbons

A team of researchers from the New York’s University of Stony Brook and the University of Tubingen in Germany opposed to the previous theory suggesting that the last human ancestor was similar to the modern chimpanzees as compared to size and appearance. They determined that the ancestor was much smaller like gibbons.

The researchers disclosed that the body mass of human ancestor indicates that they belonged to the environment favorable creature of gibbon-sized, with the help of samples of primate fossil found in Europe, Africa and Asia. The team claims that it is around 17 to 25 inches long in size and 11 pounds i.e. 5 kg in weight, which is exactly same like the modern gibbons.

These all finding gained from the research are considered as the fundamentals for the effective study of evolution in the human family-tree. According to the researchers, the several hominoid species appeared in each of their diversity at some point of Miocene era. But, the researchers as well as many paleontologists are still not able to recognize from the records of scarce fossil, where the last common ape and human ancestors were originated and what they looked like.

A visiting assistant-professor from the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen, Germany, Mark Grabowski who led the study, stated on Thursday that, “Body size directly affects how an animal relates to its environment, and no trait has a wider range of biological implications. However, little is known about the size of the last common ancestor of humans and all living apes. This omission is startling because numerous paleobiological hypotheses depend on body size estimates at and prior to the root of our lineage.”
